Espresso based coffee styles:
make GREAT espresso Coffee drinks at Home. ESPRESSO: A "short black", (30ml, 30 sec, single dose), with thick DOPPIO ESPRESSO: A double shot of espresso, (50-60ml, 60 sec, double dose). RISTRETTO: A very short espresso, (15 ml in 30 sec, single dose). A very traditional Italian espresso! DOPPIO RISTRETTO: A short double espresso, (30ml, 60 sec, double dose). ESPRESSO ROMANO: A single or double shot of espresso, served with a slice of lemon in the cup. MOCHA: A espresso-and chocolate syrup drink: serve in an espresso cup, with 10 ml of chocolate syrup in the bottom, a single shot of espresso (30ml, 30sec, single dose) on top. 30-60ml of steamed milk can be added. CAFE FREDDO: A single or double shot of espresso, poured into cold milk. About 240ml total. Sometimes a scoop of vanilla ice cream is added. CAPPUCCINO: Named after the 'Capucin' monk's brown/white habit. A double shot of espresso (60ml, 60 sec, double dose), hot steamed milk (about 80ml) and frothy microfoam (about 80ml). Served in a thick porcelain cup. Cocoa powder is dusted over the top. DOPPIO PICCOLO LATTE: a double shot of espresso (60ml, 60 sec, double dose), hot milk and microfoam (60ml of each) served in a 180ml glass. Half coffee and half steamed milk, no microfoam. Based on a long black: a single shot of espresso (30ml, 30 sec, single dose) poured into 120-140ml of hot water, then topped up with hot milk. This is the French “Café au Lait”, which is traditionally served in a bowl, not a cup. As a compromise, some cafes are now serving the flat white in a very large shallow cup. PICCOLO: means “small” and can be any coffee style: a Piccolo Latte, Piccolo Cappuccino, Piccolo Caffé Freddo. Served in a small glass or cup.
poured over crushed ice. AFFOGATO: An espresso glass or cappuccino cup, containing a scoop of vanilla ice cream, over which a single or double shot of espresso is poured. Traditionally a simple ‘cold coffee’ style, but if made as a dessert, chocolate shavings, pistachio nuts, liqueur and some cream can be added. ICED COFFEE, AMERICAN STYLE: A tall glass, with ice-cubes in the bottom, to which a double shot of espresso (60ml, 60 sec, double dose) is added. Top up with water, add sugar to taste, serve with tall spoon to stir. CAFFE LUNGA: the socalled “Long Black”: a 180ml cup, filled 4/5th with hot water, on top of which a single or double shot of espresso is poured, so the crema floats on top of the coffee. This style is also called an “Americano”, in which case it is made in a 240ml cup. DOPPIO MACCHIATO: A double shot of espresso (60ml, 60sec, double dose), served with a teaspoon of hot milk and a teaspoon of microfoam.
